Lightning - Blitz

Blitz - Stromstoß von oben (Foto: Pixelio.de)

Hi all my friends,

I'm at the house of my daughter and hope tomorrow I will have my internet back!. Last Thursday we had a terrible storm here in Austria and a lightning visited my internet box...

It had the best timing because I just began sending the patterns of The World Around Me!

I want to ask all of you who had or have to wait 24 hours for the pattern to excuse me. I could send the patterns once a day but that's long when you happen to order just after I was on the net...

Tomorrow I hope that everything's back to normal!

Hallo Freunde,

My first Pattern/Tutorial - Meine erste Anleitung!

Finally I could do my first pattern and now it's already in Etsy .

You can also do this pattern with a felting needle, you don't need to have an embellisher!

I am doing these patterns as a series and plan to do a new one each month. They are not only patterns but tutorials. If you collect them you will always learn something more in each one. I also want to include dolls and objects.

This one is inspired in papercuts but is a "feltcut".

The size is about 9" x 12" (framed 13" x 17") 22 x 30 cm, framed 33 x 43 cm.

The patterns are sent as a .pdf file and a .jpg photo.

I hope that everything works smoothily, if you have any problems please send me a mail!

This is so exciting! I had to learn how to do .pdf files and some more things...

Emily, our wonderful Wwoof assistant did these pies today. We are all waiting for them to get cooler so that we can attack them!

Are they great?

Award

Today I got this award from a lady from Austria. This means very much to me because I'm not a prophet in my own land. I must thank her once more for this!

I wish you Nature - Ich wünsche dir Natur

This is the product of the process. I added many details. It is rather big, 14"x22" (35x55cm).

This fairy mother wishes that there's nature left for her child. They are yet in a garden of plenty with little elves playing everywhere...

Bringing the planet back to life - Den Planet wiederbeleben

This little fairy looks at the planet earth lying at her feet. It has a real need of revival! Plants, insects, animals don't look that good any more... So he asks it's little angel for help...

It is about 10" x 11" and is gone in a swap to South America.

Many things came into my mind doing this piece. We have the football Europe cup these days and everybody is thinking about this. I thought of the planet lying like a football at the feet of the fairy and I also thought about the Little Prince, his planet and the fox...

Cesky Krumlov

Yesterday we had a day trip to Cesky Krumlov, the most beautiful medieval city in Europe (for me at least!). We wanted to show it to our dear guest, Emilyrose, who is WWoofing at our farm. I already told about it before. Here you see her eating a tiramisú on a terrace near the Vltava (river) together with my husband and me.

We visited lots of art and crafts galleries and I bought two wonderful pieces I must share with you! One is an angel and the other a cheese cover from czeck artists.

These are from Mariz and you can find them on this site.

Studio apron - Studioschürze

I wanted to share what I did with an old jeans that was one of my favorites but now is too small to wear...

I cut it into all of his parts and then rearranged these to have an apron. If you look exactly at it, you will discover how I did it. Both front part pieces are the front legs pieces. I cut it around the pockets to get the collar. I used the back of the legs to make it wider. The two straps are made out of the reinforced side seam of the legs. I used all the rest to make de details.

Workshop at the Nordsee Akademie - Workshop in der Nordsee Akademie

I am giving an embellisher workshop at this place, the Nordsee Akademie in Germany near to the Denmark border. It is organized by Christiane Christiansen and takes place from the 5.-7. September 2008.

I'm going to show my new techniques, tips and tricks.

Resolutions revisited - Vorhaben bearbeitet

After visiting the tax office today and after the conversations I had there I noticed that it's not so easy to get out of the world as I thought... But I got a positive solution for my bookkeeping. One I can live with.

I also noticed I can't be as self sufficient as I would like to be and that the tax office won't let me pay the taxes in kind...

This means I will continue to sell in an easygoing way at Etsy but I will increase the interaction, exchange of information, free tutorials and collaborative projects in the blog as I said. I really want to share many things with you all and do swaps.

Also, would it be a good idea to sell some of the patterns of the smaller pieces I do so that more of you have access to them? I would be happy to get a feedback here. I would have more time to do bigger pieces this way. I can send them as e-patterns with no shipping costs... Of course the originals have more background diversity and work as I can possibly explain.

I look forward for your comments!

Ich freue mich auf Kommentare!

Poll - Umfrage

These were the results of the poll:

I never would have thought that so many visitors read the answers to the comments. It was very useful to see what visitors do. Now I feel commited to answer at least more often to many of them.
Thank you for voting!

WWKIP day - Welt Strick Tag im Öffentlichen Raum

Yesterday we had our KIP-day (Knit in Public) in my studio café. It's not that public, but it was a new experience and if I can get some ladies to meet once in a while perhaps we have a bigger circle than 3 ladies next year. It was very interesting though and I knitted this bag:

Process IV - Ablauf IV

Now the birds appeared (yes, dodos...) and the cat with the flute, the fish and the ?s are beginning to appear too.

Process III - Ablauf III

This time I enjoyed working with the holes. I want them to be the fruits of a tree in this magic forest. It is a fantasy place. Not just for the story but for the emboidery. It is a story for stitchers. It is exuberant, has an outsider look and triggers my imagination. What is this little person doing in the middle of all this? The story comes later, it grows with every stitch. It will grow around this scene in a crazy way.

The crazy birds come next. I can't deny that the dodos of The Tale of How keep coming into my mind.

At this moment I have many birds in my mind, there is a couple of birds building a nest in a hole of the outer wall of the studio. You can see it in this picture:

They find the straw bales inside very comfy and carry all the threads they find outside ( I throw always the thread waste around when I sit on the terrace for them to find) to the inside of the wall. I always hear some scratching inside when they are working. I like that.

Birds are a theme at the moment. We also got a heap of ducks from a friend because he has cows and an agricultural inspector from the EC didn't allow him to have ducks running all around the farm (where are we heading to????? no ducks running around in a farm?). Well, because we don't keep any cows we are allowed to see ducks running, and hens, and sheep... I rather have a magic forest or magic fields outside.

Seen in the blog of Emilio

Emilio

I loved this parking nightmare!

Process II - Ablauf II

I took a photo of the piece at this stage, before I begin with the stitching and appliqué. The idea came from the sketch I did in Italy.

A friend sent me this:

Scientists have finally discovered what's wrong with the human brain:
On the left side, there is nothing right,
and on the right side, there is nothing left

Process - Ablauf

This is the next step.

I used these wools to make the tendrils. I'm thinking illuminated book as you see...

On the last photo I wanted to show how light the whole thing is. It is very thin because of ironing it with steam so that the background felts even more. You can even make a shawl with this.

The point is having a wonderful surface to stitch.

Background - Hintergrund

I am doing the background of my new piece and I wanted to show how it looks like before it's worked on.

I love to do this kind of backgrounds because they look so mysterious. I must say this time it wasn't easy to take the photos showing the exact colors because everything looked rather green and the piece had very light color differences due to the different fabrics, sheer, cheesecloth, Colback, tulle, silk, organza, etc. that I embedded between light wool pieces and a woolfelt underground. I tried to work in a same color so that it isn't too messy as a background and I had to accentuate the hue differences with Photoshop for you to see the light changes of color on the surface. I think the first photo gives quite a good idea of what it looks like.

Now I must begin to work on the composition.

I forgot to talk about this piece yesterday - and it went unnoticed because of the emphasis on the other theme - but I want to come back to it because it's the beginning of a bigger work that I intend to do in small pieces and is to be sewn together on the end. That's why this little square (6"x6" - 15x15cm) doesn't tell the whole story.

The idea is to finish all the small pieces, stitched and with backing to do a kind of folk wall rug trying many new ways of using fabric, embellished wool and stitching.

You won't notice very much on the photo (perhaps better on the other one) that the middle piece stands about 1" (2,5cm) out of the background as the center of a reliquary casket and it's made of crochet with fabric stripes. I was making these plastic bags bowls and thought about using my huge stashes of fabric for doing bowls because I can never in three lives use all the amount of fabric I have stocked. I also have many self dyed fabrics I don't use because I like to stitch by hand rather than by machine and they are too stiff for this, specially in many layers.

It worked great and I did a felt frame with the embellisher to surround it. I used a flannel for the background and stitched all over. I punched some knitting wool threads couched with bullion knots around the figure.

The idea is to do this kind of construction in fabric (not that exuberant though). I'm always in love with constructions. It's not going to be exactly like that but you get what I mean. Now that I found this photo to depict the idea I find the photo also worth pondering for a future work... :-)

I will show you the further process.

Some resolutions... - Einige Vorhaben...

Today I took some resolutions about my work in the future.

I'm not happy at all with the way things are happening in the world. I'm very concerned about the environement and social politics. I don't want to support the way taxes are applied to the advantage of wealthy people and to the detriment of poorer ones, old people and families.

I was thinking about all these issues for a long time and pondered the possible decisions. I want to get out of the system as much as I can. I'm already retired and want to try new ways of interacting in this world. A new option to avoid consumption and consumerism.

So I decided for me:

  • not to sell any more but to swap.
  • to accept only paying in kind.
  • to use my blog for interaction, exchange of information, free tutorials, collaborative projects (I have some ideas about new sorts of challenges)
  • to be free for chosing any techniques for my art (I feel I'm in a kind of mold at the time, working only small for instance because people can't afford bigger pieces...)
  • to share, share, share

  • teilen, teilen, teilen
For the moment this is all I have to say about this theme. I just wanted to explain why I'm working differently now.

This doesn't mean at all that I think that selling is wrong! I'm in the lucky position to live in a farm and being self sufficient. I just don't see the point of having to do a terribly complicated bookkeeping (write the time I leave for driving to the post office, the kilometers I drive, when I arrive, when I come back, just to give you an example) now that I'm retired. It's the story of the fisher, you surely know it:

"The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.

Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "Only a little while.” The American then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?" The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs." The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life." The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you will run your ever-expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15 to 20 years." “ But what then?" asked the Mexican. The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions?...Then what?" The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

Sorry that they use an American banker, you could use any nationality!!

I hope you continue enjoying my blog!

World Wide Knit in Public Day - Tag des Strickens

New Poll!- Comments

I would be happy if you answer the question of this new poll on the right column of the blog. I don't mean it only for my blog but as a general information to all of you who perhaps have the same worry.

I'm always wondering if everybody reads the answers to the comments they make or not.

I cherish so much the nice words you always have for my art and I would like to reply to all of you and say thanks. I have a bad conscience because I can't answer all of them...

I would suggest that if you have questions you really want me to answer you better send them per email. I noticed some people happen to ask questions in the comments and I don't think they read the answers there (I always forget to look for the answers to the comments I made and I suppose this happens to other people too). Time is such a scarce thing...

Thank you for answering!

Cyber Fiber Postcard - Clouds on the horizon - Wolken am Horizont

I'm participating in this swap organized by Susan Lenz. I used a stamp I made with one of my pieces and I stamped it with a stamp of mine. I couldn't send it as is in the Austrian post offices so I have to put it in an envelope.
